Many people have been exposed to puppets while they grow up. You see all types, but if you are interested in starting to use them even though might have seen them a million times, when it comes down to them you probably don't know much about the type to choose if you actually want to start using them.
Finger puppets are probably the cheapest and easier to learn.
They are used primarily for children, and to put on little plays for entertainment purposes.
Anytime you see a child with a finger puppet you can bet that they are using their imagination on overload because they have to become that character in a sense, and it really does a lot for a child to know they have that power. It really can help in many other ways besides them actively using their imagination.
When I first started using finger puppets I was young, but my parents both understood I need to know what I was doing, and after that I was hooked.
The great thing about it was that while it boosted my imagination skills it also was very cheap and inexpensive to get started.
One thing that any parent who has been so a while knows is the pain of your child finding out about a new hobby and wanting to go spend hundreds or thousands of dollars in some cases on the thing they need in order to do it. One of the great things about puppets, and finger puppets specifically is that it's not needed.
Just by having the sets available online for finger puppets, if you do want to spend money on this new hobby then you can, and it saves a lot of time. Part of the fun of them is creating your own world, filled with your own characters and getting to choose how they exist and what motives they have.
